This warm and grounded family kitchen brings character to a 1990s new-build in Warwickshire.
Set within a modern home in Leamington Spa, this family kitchen is a study in warmth and restraint. Designed in collaboration with interior designer Serena Pitchers through our IKEA Design Service, the project balances practicality with craftsmanship to create a calm, grounded space that feels both contemporary and deeply personal.
When our client first moved into the house, she was searching for a sense of connection. Having previously lived in a Victorian terrace, the 1990s new-build felt unfamiliar – generous in space, but lacking the character she was used to. The kitchen, in particular, felt disjointed: an awkward L-shaped layout and limited natural light which was both underwhelming and impractical.
Working closely with the interior designer, our brief evolved into something clear and heartfelt – to create a kitchen that felt calm, tactile, and connected to nature, while offering the functionality of a busy family home.
Designing with the IKEA Framework
To balance vision with budget, the kitchen design used IKEA cabinetry as a foundation, allowing our client to focus their investment on the elements that really make a difference to the space – bespoke craftsmanship, beautiful finishes, and thoughtful detailing.
Our client had a clear idea of the feel they wanted for the kitchen. HUSK advised on the most efficient combination of IKEA units to maximise storage and flow, then tailored the design with made-to-measure HUSK cabinet fronts and a bespoke breakfast larder, crafted to integrate seamlessly into the layout. The addition of a peninsula created a sociable hub, subtly zoning the cooking area with a U-shaped kitchen layout and introducing a generous work surface with bar seating on the other side.
I was so impressed by HUSK, the design feels contemporary yet timeless, and the fact that the beautiful HUSK fronts fit perfectly onto IKEA carcasses made it such a clever and worthwhile upgrade.
Natural Materials with a Modern Edge
Blending natural textures and sustainable materials, every surface was chosen to invite touch and to age beautifully over time, creating a kitchen that feels organic yet intentional.
The Cabinetry
The cabinetry combines FENIX® Castoro Ottawa fronts with exposed ply edges for a subtle, handcrafted feel, while real oak veneer V-groove panels add depth and warmth.
The Worktops
The Neolith Abu Dhabi worktops bring a refined stone-like texture that is durable, timeless, and softly reflects the natural light.
The Tiles
The vertically stacked Hoxton Olive Gloss Porcelain Tiles by Mandarin Stone bring rustic texture which adds to the cosy feel of the room.
The Lighting
Papier-mâché ceiling lamps by Zara Home add an organic texture that beautifully compliments the space, hanging gently over the worktops.
A Calm & Earthy Colour Palette
After two decades living in London, our client felt called back to the calming green open spaces of Warwickshire, where she grew up.
The palette was carefully curated to create a sense of calm continuity throughout the space. Composed to bring the outdoors in with a balance of earthy greens, soft browns, and muted neutrals that ground the space and complement the surrounding West Midlands landscape.
The tone of the FENIX® Castoro Ottawa cabinetry pairs effortlessly with olive-hued wall tiles and mid-century furnishings throughout the home, creating harmony across the open-plan living space. As daylight shifts through the day, the room takes on a golden glow; warm, calm, and deeply inviting.
I wanted to find a kitchen that felt modern and affordable, as I’ve always been drawn to more classic styles.
Finishing Touches
Every detail of this kitchen has purpose. Push-to-open wall units keep lines clean, while solid brass Kilburn handles by Corston Architectural add a tactile counterpoint – their deep bronze tone catching the light throughout the day.
Open shelving in Oak Veneer on Ply softens the architecture, displaying curated pieces and greenery that give the space personality without clutter.
A Continuation in the Utility Room
Just off the main kitchen sits the utility room; a pared-back and simplified continuation of the design. Here, FENIX® Castoro Ottawa fronts create a cohesive link while offering a practical, cost-effective solution for a high-traffic space.
With warm green walls and rustic floor tiles, the utility room is both functional and inviting, showing that even the most practical spaces can feel beautiful and thoughtful.
