At HUSK, we believe small kitchens deserve thoughtful, design-led solutions.
Compact spaces are often written off as limiting, but with the right approach they can be some of the most functional and beautiful kitchens we create.
Let’s answer some common questions around small kitchen design, and bust a few myths. Our kitchen designers Georgia Wells & Natasha Townsend share their top tips for making the most of small spaces.
Can Small Kitchens Be Design-Led?
Having a small kitchen does not mean that you have to compromise on design. If anything, practical limitations can lead to more refined and impactful design. With the right proportions, finishes, and detailing, small kitchens can be just as design-conscious as larger ones.
For example, the considered and compact layout of The Clerkenwell Kitchen completely transformed a modern open-plan kitchen living room that lacked cohesion. Clever layout adjustments and custom-built storage under the stairs ensured every inch was purposeful, creating a kitchen that not only feels spacious, but beautifully crafted, too.
Small spaces have to be functional and practical over anything else. Small spaces = less cabinets = smaller cost = more opportunity to invest in appliances and higher quality fronts.
Do You Have to Knock Down Walls to Gain Kitchen Space?
It’s a common misconception that structural changes are necessary to make a small kitchen space practical. However, careful layout planning space-saving solutions can have a big impact on enhancing flow and function without reaching for the sledgehammer.
A great example is The Lewisham Park Galley Kitchen, where a historic Edwardian space was reimagined while preserving its structure. Bespoke HUSK x Another Country Mist Green fronts, paired with hand-painted cupboards blending into the wall, optimise light and height, while the combination of wall units and one open shelf maximises storage and adds personality.
With small kitchens, storage is key, so I always recommend wall units. The addition of one open shelf opens up the space and offers an opportunity to display a bit of personality with decorative items.
Are Bespoke Kitchens Only for Large Homes?
Bespoke kitchens can be considered exclusive to those with big budgets and big spaces. At HUSK, we’re on a mission to make bespoke kitchens more accessible. The truth is, often small spaces require bespoke items due to the limitations of cabinet sizes available from highstreet brands. Custom cabinetry ensures storage, proportion, and finish are tailored precisely to your home.
Take The Old Pottery Kitchen as an example: a modest footprint was transformed into a light, airy, and highly functional open-plan kitchen. By incorporating bespoke features, we ensured every nook and corner was optimised for storage, flow, and practicality.
Are Layout Options Limited in a Small Kitchen?
There is a myth that limited space means limited layout choices. However, a little creativity allows endless possibilities in compact kitchens.
From bespoke cabinetry to upgrading IKEA/Howdens kitchens with custom fronts, we design your kitchen layout around your lifestyle.
Galley, L-shaped, and U-shaped layouts can all work beautifully when tailored to your space and how you love to prepare food and organise your kitchen.
Space Saving Hacks From Our HUSK Kitchen Designers; Natasha & Georgia
Handles
Opt for recessed handles instead of pull bars & knobs as they do not protrude into the more limited space.
Drawers
Drawers are always a better use of space than cupboards, which can leave a lot of dead space. Use smaller internal drawers for cutlery, utensils, herbs & spices.
Taps
Consider installing a hot water tap. This upgrade clears up worktop space by eliminating the need for a kettle.
Lighting
Natural light can be limited in smaller rooms. Consider adding discrete LED lighting under cabinets and shelves to create a brighter workspace.
Bins
Whilst integrated bins might feel like they’re taking up storage space, floor space is precious in small kitchens. Plus, a single unit can have space for up to three bins, plus a handy drawer above for storing your bin liners and cleaning products.
