A calm and architectural Walnut kitchen in North London.
This is a kitchen defined by confident material choices and careful editing. Rooted in minimal Japandi principles, it is calm, architectural and materially driven. Our client was looking for a high-end feel with an emphasis on timber, simplicity and restraint.
In the early design stages, we explored two distinct directions: a pale, white-tinted oak or a deeper walnut. Both aligned with a Scandinavian-Japanese aesthetic, but each carried a very different atmosphere. Ultimately, the decision to use walnut veneer gave the project greater depth and presence. The richness of tone and expressive grain detail create real impact, particularly alongside the marble worktops.
Material-led minimalism
The walnut veneer fronts, finished with a walnut edge, form the foundation of the design. Natural variation in the wood grain gives each elevation movement and individuality, allowing the material itself to carry the visual interest.
To keep this central to the design, the majority of the cabinetry is push-to-open so nothing interrupts the flow of the timber. Bespoke solid walnut handles were introduced selectively to the tall units, dishwasher and bin – a response to the client’s initial interest in spacer panels, creating gentle rhythm and framing without adding unwanted contrast.
With the walnut doing most of the talking, the surrounding palette is intentionally restrained. Clean lines and a limited mix of materials allow the timber and marble to sit comfortably together proudly.
The finished space feels calm and grounded – a result of careful editing, thoughtful detailing and natural materials.
Built around Howdens cabinetry
This project was designed using Howdens cabinets paired with HUSK custom kitchen fronts. By focusing on proportion, materiality and precision detailing from the outset, we were able to create a highly tailored result while working with a modular cabinet system that made our client’s budget go further.
It’s an approach that combines the practicality of standard cabinetry with the individuality of custom fronts – delivering a kitchen that feels considered, cohesive and design-led.
