The Oak & Steel Kitchen

This Bristol kitchen was designed as part of a modern kitchen extension in for a young family. The brief was to create a calm, functional space rooted in natural materials and clean lines.

Guided by Japandi principles of simplicity and purpose, this kitchen is designed to work effortlessly for everyday family life. The restrained layout ensures the space feels open and considered.

The kitchen balances form and function with warm timber, subtle detailing and a seamless, uncluttered aesthetic. A stainless steel worktop was central to the design, introducing a contemporary counterpoint to the softness of the oak cabinetry.

The kitchen is built on Howdens kitchen frames, finished with HUSK’s Natural Oak Timber Veneer kitchen cabinet fronts. Exposed ply edges are intentionally featured throughout the design, celebrating craftsmanship and adding depth to the cabinetry. This approach allows for a bespoke appearance while working intelligently with modular kitchen systems.

A custom HUSK larder unit was designed to make the most of a recessed wall nook, transforming an awkward space into practical, generous storage. Internally, smart solutions such as integrated drawers and a discreet spice drawer keep everyday items organised, while the exterior remains calm and uncluttered.

The stainless steel kitchen worktop, sourced by the client, plays both a functional and visual role in the space. Naturally hygienic, heat-resistant and easy to maintain, stainless steel is well suited to busy family kitchens. Over time, it develops a soft patina that adds character, complementing the warmth of the oak and reinforcing the kitchen’s material-led design.

Exposed ply edges gently frame each cabinet door, enhancing the layered, tactile quality of the kitchen. Stainless steel pull handles echo the finish of the worktop, remaining understated and modern while offering durability for daily use. These quiet, thoughtful details bring cohesion and longevity to this Japandi style kitchen.
