A calm and confident architect’s kitchen in Redland, Bristol
This bold kitchen sits within a stunning Bristol home, previously reconfigured by its former owners and now being renovated by architect Barbara and her family.
The open kitchen-living space looks out over the garden through a fully glazed rear wall, flooding the sloped ceiling room with natural light – an airy, intentional space shaped through an architect’s lens.
Working with our client Barbara, who brought a clear and confident vision, the project was collaborative from the outset. With a strong direction already in place, our role was to refine the technical details and deliver custom solutions – ensuring the design sat seamlessly within the architecture.
The result is a kitchen that feels both striking and considered; bold in colour, yet calm in composition.
We’re over the moon with the kitchen. It contributed to create a lovely atmosphere and ties very well with the interior architecture and the natural colours of the surrounding landscape. The finish and quality of the panels is fantastic.
Designing a Family Kitchen with Smart Storage Solutions
The visual direction centred on a balance of boldness and restraint. The client was drawn to warm tones paired with clean, simple lines – avoiding anything overly minimal or stark.
Functionally, the priority was clear: generous, well-resolved storage for a busy family home. Just as importantly, the kitchen needed to feel connected to the surrounding architecture, flowing naturally within the space rather than sitting apart from it.
While the overall aesthetic appears effortless, the design required careful planning to resolve several architectural constraints. The oven position was fixed, setting a boundary for the layout, while varied ceiling heights introduced complexity around the tall cabinetry. The fridge run also required particular attention, needing to align precisely with shelving positioned along the stairwell.
Our approach was to work with these constraints rather than against them – using alignment, proportion, and detailing to create a sense of order throughout.
I personally enjoyed the design process very much. For me, as the architect and client, working with the HUSK team felt like an integrated team working seamlessly together. The attention to detail (design and installation) was second to none.
Custom Kitchen Design Using IKEA Cabinets
The design began with a base of cabinetry from IKEA’s Metod range. Then HUSK’s custom interventions played a key role in elevating the design beyond a standard IKEA configuration.
A standout feature is the larder unit – an adapted solution built from an IKEA base. As standard sizes didn’t meet the brief, we designed 1m-wide drawer fronts to unify a combination of 40cm and 60cm internal drawers. Above, custom cabinetry was introduced to navigate an awkwardly positioned beam, allowing the unit to feel cohesive and intentional.
Hidden within the scheme are doors leading to a walk-in storage area tucked into the eaves, maximising otherwise underutilised space and adding a playful surprise to this family kitchen. Additional custom elements include a custom shelving unit and a pantry, contributing to a layered and highly functional storage system.
Material-Led Kitchen Design with FENIX and Ply
Featuring HUSK fronts in FENIX® Rosso Namib, this kitchen includes beautiful ply and oak details.
Integrated scalloped handles, crafted in exposed ply, run across the cabinetry – bringing a tactile quality while subtly highlighting the materiality of the design. These details add rhythm and softness without disrupting the overall impact of the space.
Elsewhere, seamless boxing around the fridge ensures visual continuity, allowing larger appliances to sit comfortably within the architecture.
I really enjoyed working with Barbara on this project. There were some technically difficult aspects that needed to be perfect which was a great challenge to work through. I’m really pleased with the outcome and most importantly, am so happy that Barbara is loving the new space.
